The Marquette University men's tennis team (3-3) dropped a 5-2 non-conference decision at FGCU (4-2) Sunday afternoon in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the doubles points for an early 1-0 advantage. Junior Kristiyan Trukov and freshman Greg Anderson claimed a 6-3 decision at the No. 3 spot and senior Daniel Fernandez and freshman Alvaro Verdu clinched the point with a 6-2 victory at No. 1.
The Fernandez/Verdu tandem is now 7-4 overall on the year and 4-2 in dual action.
Unfortunately for MU, the team was only able to secure one singles victory. Junior Nick Dykema claimed a 6-4, 7-5 win over Oliver Landert at the No. 3 position, but a pair of three-set setbacks in two matches and late FGCU rallies in others proved to be the difference.
The Golden Eagles will return home to host UIC on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. CT in the squad's next action.
