Junior Mackenzie Stearns of the Marquette University men's tennis team has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Trailing 3-1 at DePaul last Saturday, Stearns fought off three match points in the third-set tiebreaker to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (he also trailed 6-5 in the third) at the No. 4 position. His win allowed MU to tie the score at 3-3 and eventually win 4-3 on the road. The Golden Eagles finished the regular season 4-0 against league programs.
The Montreal, Canada native is the second Marquette player to be honored this season. Senior Daniel Fernandez claimed the accolade on April 6 after leading the team to a pair of BIG EAST victories.
The Golden Eagles are the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament in Cayce, S.C. and will face No. 7 seed Creighton at 11:30 a.m. CT on Friday, April 29. MU defeated the Bluejays 6-1 at home on April 1. The tourney winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
