
Tennis Teams Begin Milwaukee Tennis Classic

SCHEDULE/RESULTS The Marquette University men's and women's tennis teams opened play at the 41st Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic Friday morning at The Town Club in Fox Point, Wis., with singles and doubles competition.
The eight-team field includes Ball State, Boise State, Marquette, Navy and Wisconsin. The squads will return to action Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and conclude competition Sunday afternoon.
After opening the campaign with doubles action against Wisconsin, the men's team faced Ball State in singles play. Sophomore Alvaro Verdu edged BSU's Lucas Anderson 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 at the No. 1 position for his first win of the year and newcomer Brandon Shanklin collected his first collegiate decision with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory against Luke Wiese.
The women's squad split a pair of doubles outings with the Badgers, claiming a 6-3 decision by senior Diana Tokar and junior Paula Tormos Sanchez at the No. 1 position. The team concluded the afternoon with singles action versus Boise State. Tokar made quick work of her opponent at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-2 decision and freshman Fleur Eggink claimed her first win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ball State's Grace Koscielski.
