MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's soccer team heads to Washington, D.C. for a mid-week match at Georgetown on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. Central time.
The contest at Shaw Field will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports Go with Monika Moore on the call.
The Golden Eagles (10-5-1, 3-3 BIG EAST) picked up a much needed three points in the BIG EAST Conference standings in their last match against Xavier on Saturday night in Milwaukee. Sixth-year senior Darian Powell scored the golden goal at the 92:23 mark on a header over the Xavier keeper on a ball played into the box by Ryley Bugay. The goal was the 23rd of Powell's career and her 10th match winner, which ties her for sixth in MU history with current assistant coach Ashley Bares.
Saturday's win puts MU alone in fifth place in the league standings at nine points with three matches to play. The Golden Eagles trail Xavier by a pair of points and are three points ahead of DePaul. The top six teams make the league tournament, with the top two teams earning a bye into the semifinals and seeds three and four hosting five and six, respectively.
Marquette's win over the Musketeers was its third in the last three matches, though the Golden Eagles have only posted multiple goals once since the end of its seven-match winning streak prior to the start of conference action.
The Hoyas (10-3-2, 4-1-1 BIG EAST) will look to regain their footing against Marquette after a 1-0 loss at Providence on Sunday afternoon in which a sixth-minute tally by Christina Klaum proved to be the difference for the Friars. GU currently leads the BIG EAST with 13 points.
Senior Rachel Corboz leads Georgetown offensively with 19 points on five goals and nine assists, while junior Amanda Carolan has a team-high eight goals. Junior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman tops the BIG EAST with 11 shutouts this season and has allowed a total of seven goals through 15 matches. Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Elizabeth Wenger leads a stingy GU defense that allows opponents just 4.5 shots per contest.
GU leads the all-time series against Marquette with a 4-3-1 and is 3-0-1 over the last four meetings. MU fell to the Hoyas, 2-0, in both the regular season and the BIG EAST tournament final last season. Carolan scored both GU goals in the regular season meeting, while Grace Damaska and Corboz tallied markers in the tournament game.
Following Thursday's match, Marquette returns to Valley Fields to host Creighton on Sunday, Oct. 22 in its final regular season home contest at 1 p.m.
POWELL RETURNS FOR SIXTH SEASON
- Forward Darian Powell led Marquette in both 2014 and 2015 with seven goals after sitting out both 2012 and 2013 with injuries and leads MU in scoring once again as a sixth-year graduate student. Powell posted points in six of the squad's first eight matches and leads the team with 14 points on five goals and a career-best four assists.
- Powell's overtime winner against Xavier on Oct. 14 leaves her alone in eighth in program history with 23 goals and was her 10th match winner, tying her for sixth all-time at MU with current assistant coach Ashley Bares.
MADDEN PROVIDES SPARK TO MU OFFENSE
- Redshirt junior forward Carrie Madden's return to the starting eleven from an early season quad injury has helped Marquette to a pair of victories following a four-match winless streak in late September. Madden's ability to generate scoring chances provides a different dynamic to the Golden Eagles' attack and was on display in MU's 2-0 victory over DePaul on Oct. 5. The redshirt junior tallied both goals in that match, her first markers since Aug. 25 against Drake.
- Through her first two years at Marquette, Madden played in a total of one match and did not record a point. That lack of playing experience didn't hinder her ability to contribute offensively in 2016 as Madden proved to be Marquette's most potent finisher. She led MU with six goals and 17 points in 2016, including four match winners. Madden scored against Butler on Oct. 23 in the 93rd minute to keep Marquette in the hunt for the BIG EAST regular season title and scored on a phenomenal finish behind her against St. John's in OT of the league tournament semifinals. Madden was named to the 2016 All-BIG EAST Championship Team and was the only MU player named to the 2017 All-BIG EAST Preseason Team.
MU CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF WOMEN'S SOCCER
- Throughout the season, Marquette will celebrate its 25th anniversary by highlighting the players and accomplishments of the University's most successful women's program. MU has appeared in the NCAA tournament in over half of its years of competition (13 of 24) and has earned 10 conference regular season titles and four league tournament crowns. In the program's 25th campaign, Marquette has posted an overall record of 333-151-55, including a mark of 312-124-47 in Markus Roeders' 22 years at the helm.
SPRECHER EMERGING AT FORWARD
- Kylie Sprecher slid into the starting lineup on Aug. 27 at Louisville and produced immediately, posting points in four straight matches and earning a pair of BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades in the process. Sprecher, a freshman from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, earned offensive MVP honors at the Marquette Invitational for her play against CMU and Mercer and was honored by the BIG EAST on Sept. 4 as the league's freshman of the week. She then posted the match winner at Boston University on Sept. 8 and assisted Darian Powell's winner on Sept. 10 at Rhode Island. Sprecher also notched a career-high two assists on both of Carrie Madden's goals in MU's 2-0 win at DePaul on Oct. 5.
MU CAPTURED SIXTH BIG EAST REGULAR SEASON TITLE IN 2016
- Eli Beard scored her first goal of 2016 just 57 seconds into overtime against DePaul on Oct. 28 to lift Marquette to the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST tournament and a share of their sixth regular season title with a 3-2 win over the Blue Demons. Senior midfielder Morgan Proffitt scored a pair of goals to help MU rebound from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits for the win. The regular season title was MU's 10th all-time, counting MU's decade-long stay in Conference USA.
GOLDEN EAGLES AMONG MOST SUCCESSFUL CURRENT BIG EAST TEAMS SINCE 2005
- Since entering the BIG?EAST?Conference in 2005, Marquette has proven to be among the conference's elite women's soccer programs. The Golden Eagles have accumulated an overall record of 181-69-32 since that time and a mark of 95-25-10 in league action, which includes six regular season conference titles and a pair of tournament championships in 2012 and 2013. MU, which has missed the NCAA?tournament just three times since its addition to the league,?went a remarkable 39-1-1 in BIG?EAST play in the four seasons from 2010-13.
