MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's soccer team heads east for its regular season finale on Thursday, Oct. 26, when it will face Seton Hall at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, New Jersey at 6 p.m. Central time.
The match will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network through FOX Sports Go with David Gass on the call. Live stats will be available on GoMarquette.com and provided by Seton Hall.
The Golden Eagles (11-6-1, 4-4 BIG EAST) secured a BIG EAST tournament quarterfinal berth with a 3-0 win over Creighton in their last match on Sunday and will fight for tournament seeding on Thursday. A win over the Pirates and a loss by Xavier against BIG EAST-leader Georgetown would result in a Sunday afternoon home quarterfinal match for MU. A loss or a Xavier win would put the Golden Eagles on the road to start league tournament action.
Redshirt junior forward Carrie Madden scored a pair of goals in the win over Creighton, while fellow forward Abby Hess added her second goal of the season on a late marker. Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Henry also made four saves in net for her eighth clean sheet of the season.
The Pirates (0-11-5, 0-5-3 BIG EAST) are winless on the year, but own draws in league play against DePaul, Butler and Creighton. Julie Stripe, Lauren Hall and Cassy Harrigan each own two goals for SHU, while goalkeepers Laura Dramis and Anna MacLean have split time in net.
Marquette owns a 5-1-1 record all-time against the Pirates, including a 2-1 victory in last year's meeting at Valley Fields. MU's lone loss came in its last trip to Carroll Field, a rain-soaked 1-0 defeat on an own goal in 2015.
Following Thursday's match, Marquette will learn its opponent for its quarterfinal match and prepare for Sunday's contest, either at Valley Fields or on the road.
MARQUETTE QUALIFIES FOR 13TH BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
- The Golden Eagles clinched their 13th BIG EAST tournament quarterfinal berth in as many seasons in the league with the 3-0 win over Creighton on Sunday afternoon. The win gives them 12 points in the league standings and puts them a win over Seton Hall and a Xavier loss to Georgetown from a quarterfinal home match. If they were to lose or Xavier beats the Hoyas, MU would travel to a quarterfinal match on Sunday afternoon. The top six teams make the league tournament, while the top two teams earn byes into the semifinals. The Golden Eagles own a pair of BIG EAST tournament crowns from 2012 and 2013 and have qualified for the league quarterfinals in their previous 12 seasons in the league.
POWELL RETURNS FOR SIXTH SEASON
- Forward Darian Powell led Marquette in both 2014 and 2015 with seven goals after sitting out both 2012 and 2013 with injuries and leads MU in scoring once again as a sixth-year graduate student. Powell posted points in six of the squad's first eight matches and sits second the team with 14 points on five goals and a career-best four assists.
- Powell's overtime winner against Xavier on Oct. 14 leaves her alone in eighth in program history with 23 goals and was her 10th match winner, tying her for sixth all-time at MU with current assistant coach Ashley Bares.
MADDEN PROVIDES SPARK TO MU OFFENSE
- Redshirt junior forward Carrie Madden's return to the starting eleven from an early season quad injury has paid dividends in conference play with her ability to generate scoring chances. She tallied a pair of goals in a 2-0 win at DePaul on Oct. 5 and scored twice in MU's 3-0 win over Creighton on Oct. 22 at Valley Fields to put her back in the team lead with six goals and 15 points in 2017.
- Through her first two years at Marquette, Madden played in a total of one match and did not record a point. That lack of playing experience didn't hinder her ability to contribute offensively in 2016 as Madden proved to be Marquette's most potent finisher. She led MU with six goals and 17 points in 2016, including four match winners. Madden scored against Butler on Oct. 23 in the 93rd minute to keep Marquette in the hunt for the BIG EAST regular season title and scored on a phenomenal finish behind her against St. John's in OT of the league tournament semifinals. Madden was named to the 2016 All-BIG EAST Championship Team and was the only MU player named to the 2017 All-BIG EAST Preseason Team.
MU CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF WOMEN'S SOCCER
- Throughout the season, Marquette will celebrate its 25th anniversary by highlighting the players and accomplishments of the University's most successful women's program. MU has appeared in the NCAA tournament in over half of its years of competition (13 of 24) and has earned 10 conference regular season titles and four league tournament crowns. In the program's 25th campaign, Marquette has posted an overall record of 334-152-55, including a mark of 313-125-47 in Markus Roeders' 22 years at the helm.
MU CAPTURED SIXTH BIG EAST REGULAR SEASON TITLE IN 2016
- Eli Beard scored her first goal of 2016 just 57 seconds into overtime against DePaul on Oct. 28 to lift Marquette to the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST tournament and a share of their sixth regular season title with a 3-2 win over the Blue Demons. Senior midfielder Morgan Proffitt scored a pair of goals to help MU rebound from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits for the win. The regular season title was MU's 10th all-time, counting MU's decade-long stay in Conference USA.
GOLDEN EAGLES AMONG MOST SUCCESSFUL CURRENT BIG EAST TEAMS SINCE 2005
- Since entering the BIG?EAST?Conference in 2005, Marquette has proven to be among the conference's elite women's soccer programs. The Golden Eagles have accumulated an overall record of 182-70-32 since that time and a mark of 96-26-10 in league action, which includes six regular season conference titles and a pair of tournament championships in 2012 and 2013. MU, which has missed the NCAA?tournament just three times since its addition to the league,?went a remarkable 39-1-1 in BIG?EAST play in the four seasons from 2010-13.
