MILWAUKEE -- The No. 16/19 Marquette University women's basketball team led by as many as 24 points as it rolled past Loyola Maryland, 83-63, in its Sunday-matinee home opener at the Al McGuire Center.
Junior Allazia Blockton led five double-digit scorers for Marquette (1-1) with 19 points. The Milwaukee, Wis. native was joined by Danielle King (13 points, seven assists and four steals), Isabelle Spingola (13 points), Erika Davenport (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Lauren Van Kleunen (12 points).
The Golden Eagles were able to get to the rim early and often in the first half, as the team compiled 21 fast break points and 16 points off turnovers. MU executed with accuracy in the third frame to shoot 50 percent from the floor (9-for-18), and defensively forced Loyola Maryland (1-3) into a scoring drought lasting over four minutes.
The final stanza followed suit, as Marquette continued to dish the rock and connect on 31-of-68 (45.6 percent) shooting. MU totaled for 7-of-20 from beyond the arc (35 percent), over double that of the Greyhounds (3-for-12, 25 percent).
The Golden Eagles also made way in the paint, scoring 40 of its 83 points down-low.
Stephanie Karcz led the Greyhounds with 27 points and nine rebounds, followed by Alexis Gray adding in 13 points.
The victory propels Marquette to a 10-2 home-opener record in the past 12 seasons.
Marquette will participate in a Thanksgiving tournament as the team heads south of the border for the Cancun Challenge and will matchup against perennial powerhouse No. 13/18 Tennessee on Nov. 23 at 5:30 p.m. CT, followed by Montana on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. CT.
