Labor Day Weekend filled with soccer in the Valley
Valley Fields will host six NCAA soccer matches over the weekend beginning Friday afternoon with the first match of the women's Marquette Invitational. The men's squad, which dropped its season opener at Kentucky last weekend in overtime, will face UIC at 6:05 p.m. on Friday before the women (3-1) take on Central Michigan immediately following that contest. Here's a complete look at the schedule for this weekend at Valley Fields:

First day of classes on Monday ring in the new academic year
Following an all-athletics welcome back dinner on Sunday evening at the Alumni Memorial Union, Marquette's 314 student-athletes began the academic year on Monday morning across campus. The Golden Eagles will look to build on their BIG EAST-best six team conference championships from 2016-17 as the new school year gets underway.

SAAC announces 2017-18 executive board and representatives
Marquette's student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) held its first meeting of the year on Monday, Aug. 28 at the Al McGuire Center. SAAC is made up of student-athletes assembled to give insight on the student-athlete experience. The committee also offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Fanatics encouraged to download MU Rewards app
MU Rewards, a free smartphone app, is designed to reward current Marquette students for their attendance and support of Marquette Athletics. Students who utilize the MU Rewards app will earn points for every home athletic event they attend. As they accumulate points, they can redeem various prizes such as Marquette apparel and gear, exclusive discounts, VIP experiences and more!
In addition to the rewards program, the MU Rewards app will serve as the new way for students to manage their basketball season tickets during the season.

Former Golden Eagle Jae Crowder involved in blockbuster NBA trade
Jae Crowder was part of a blockbuster trade between the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers that saw Crowder, Isaiah Thomas and other assets sent to the Cavaliers in exchange for Kyrie Irving. Crowder will join his third team after spending time playing for the Dallas Mavericks and Celtics. He played for Marquette from 2010-12, winning the BIG EAST Player of the Year award in his final season.

MAGIS mentor program holds first meeting
Marquette's MAGIS mentors met this week in preparation for being paired with their freshmen mentees next week. The program, which stands for stands for Marquette Athletes Guiding and Inspiring Success, matches freshmen student-athletes with upperclassmen athletes to offer guidance as they begin their college careers. The program began in the fall of 2016 to help establish academic, athletic and personal goals and ensure overall achievement and graduation success.

Basketball programs aid Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts
The Marquette men's and women's basketball programs each responded to the call to action from University of Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson this week by sending shoes and other gear to aid in the recovery effort from Hurricane Harvey in Houston and along the Gulf Coast.

Pair earn BIG EAST weekly accolades
A pair of Golden Eagles earned BIG EAST Conference weekly honors on Monday following standout performances last weekend. Volleyball's Allie Barber earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors after averaging 4.83 kills per set against three ranked foes at the Rainbow Wahine Tournament, including MU's upset over tournament-host Hawai'i. Classmate Maddy Henry also earned accolades in leading the women's soccer squad to a pair of shutouts against Drake and Louisville as she was awarded BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors.

Volleyball and cross country compete on the road
The women's volleyball team, following last weekend's upset win at No. 20 Hawai'I, continues its season on Friday and Saturday with matches against Miami (Ohio), Wichita State and IUPUI at the Hampton Inn Invitational in Indianapolis. The men's and women's cross country squads kick off their season on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Romeoville, Illinois at the Flames/Flyer Challenge.
