River Forest Final Results | Purdue Final Results
The Marquette University men's tennis team opened the 2017-18 campaign at the pair of events over the weekend, picking up a number of singles and doubles matches at the Purdue Fall Invitational and the River Forest Collegiate Invitational.
Each of the 11 members of the roster saw action over the weekend as four players made the squad's annual appearance at Purdue's event, while the remainder headed south to River Forest. Up next for several members of the team will be the Milwaukee Tennis Classic (Sept. 20-24), which features a new format in 2017.
In West Lafayette, junior Alvaro Verdu advanced to the semifinals of the top draw before falling to an opponent from Cleveland State. Sophomore Luke Smrek picked up a pair of wins in the consolation bracket of the Flight A group, earning two three-set decisions.
The team's results at River Forest were highlighted by a runner-up performance by sophomore Brandon Shanklin in the No. 3 singles bracket and a third-place effort in the No. 1 singles draw by sophomore Brett Meyers. Freshman Julian Robinson, who earned his first collegiate victories over the course of the weekend, earned fifth-place at No. 4 singles and senior Andre Romanello did the same at No. 6.
