The Marquette University men's tennis team opened play at the 42nd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Thursday with singles and doubles competition.
The tournament, which has featured numerous formats throughout the year, moved back to a singles and doubles draw, rather than the recent team competition. Marquette is being represented at the tourney by juniors Alvaro Verdu and Greg Anderson, sophomore Luke Smrek and freshman Luis Heredia Gomez.
Verdu and Anderson earned positions in the qualifying draw and both opened with a victory before falling in straight sets in the second match of the afternoon. Smrek and Heredia Gomez will open play on Friday in main draw action.
In doubles play, Smrek and Anderson held off their opponents from Wisconsin for an 8-5 win, while Verdu and Heredia Gomez dropped a tough 9-8 matchup with Iowa.
Main draw action in both singles and doubles resumes Friday morning.
