NYACK, New York - Marquette University sophomore faceoff specialist Jared Hershman was announced as a member of Puerto Rico's Men's National Team for the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships in Netanya, Israel.
"This is a great opportunity for Jared to compete on the international level at such a young age," MU head coach Joe Amplo said. "It will be a chance for him to get experience playing against some of the best lacrosse players in the world and help him build on the early part of his Marquette career. With the graduation of two FOGOs for us after this year, the extra training and competition over the summer will also allow Jared to get a head start on preparing himself for his junior season in 2019."
Hershman appeared in five games for the Golden Eagles during his freshman season at the face-off position, going 3-for-11 including two faceoff wins against No. 20 Ohio State. He is one of 23 members of the active roster, along with nine alternates, and joins University of Tampa's Alex Patton as the lone face-off specialists.
Puerto Rico gained membership to the FIL just 14 months ago and whittled its first-ever team from 80 eligible players following player assessment camps, tournament play and a two-day tryout.
"We had two goals in mind," said head coach Jeff Ramos in a press release. "First was to select a team we believe will be competitive at the World Championships. The second and just as important, was to establish a base group of young players we could build future national teams around."
Marquette has ties with the United States National Team as well, on which Amplo serves as an assistant coach. Former Golden Eagles Liam Byrnes, B.J. Grill and Jacob Richard all completed with the U.S. Lacrosse training team and volunteer assistant coach Ryan Brown made the active American roster.
The FIL Men's Lacrosse World Championship will run from July 12-21 in Israel and features 50 participating countries and over 2,000 athletes.
Since 1967, the U.S. has won gold or silver medal at every men's international world championship in field lacrosse. The U.S. won gold in 1967, 1974, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2010. The U.S. finished as the runner-up to Canada in 1978, 2006 and 2014.
