NEW YORK - Seniors Maya Marion and William Eggers swept the BIG EAST Field Athletes of the Week awards after impressive efforts at the Jack Johnson Invite over the weekend, the league office announced today.
This is Marion's third-career BIG EAST weekly honor, including her second during indoor action, while Eggers collects his first-ever weekly award.
Marion set two personal-bests on Saturday. In the shot put, the Aurora, Ill., native threw for a career-best toss with a fifth-place throw of 15.23 meters, which is tops in the BIG EAST. The distance is the No. 2 indoor mark all-time at Marquette and was farther than the current outdoor record set by Anne Rygiewicz (15.69 meters/51-5.75 feet) in 1996. Marion's toss also ranks 59th-nationally.
Marion also set the second-best throw in the BIG EAST in the weight throw this season with a personal-best of 17.18 meters, which ranks fifth all-time at Marquette.
Eggers put down a heptathlon score in his only tune-up before the BIG EAST Championships next month. Eggers placed third at the Jack Johnson Invite with a score of 4,953 points, a personal-best and the No. 3 mark all-time at Marquette.
Within the event, he recorded four top-three finishes and registered personal-bests in the 60-meter dash and high jump. His point total ranks 42nd in the NCAA so far this season and leads a trio of Marquette athletes in the BIG EAST rankings.
The Golden Eagles are back in action this Friday-Saturday, Feb. 2-3, at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre, and the UW-Parkside Classic in Kenosha.
