Full BIG EAST Release
NEW YORK – Junior midfielder Luka Prpa earns his second-consecutive BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week award, while Patrick Seagrist collects his second Defensive Player of the Week honor this year, the league office announced on Monday.
Â
Prpa's second-half brace in Marquette's crucial 2-1 victory over Xavier secured his second-straight offensive weekly award and fourth of his career. Trailing 1-0 midway through the second half, Prpa tied the game on a free kick outside the box in the 68th minute. Just 9 minutes later, he followed up his initial shot that was blocked with the game-winner off the bar and in.
Â
The Wind Lake, Wisconsin, native now has eight points on three goals and two assists in the past two games – both Golden Eagle victories. He currently sits at 13 points on fourth goals and five assists on the season, which ranks seventh in the BIG EAST. His five helpers rank atop the league's leaders.
Â
An assist on Prpa's game-winner highlighted Seagrist's second Defensive Player of the Week award this season. The Streamwood, Illinois, native is fourth on the team with seven points, coming on three goals and an assist.
Â
However, it's been the stout defensive play of Seagrist, and the back line as a unit, that has driven the success for Marquette of late. Against Xavier, the Golden Eagles surrendered just two shots on goal and seven shots overall to a team that ranked first in goals scored, points and assists, while ranking third in shots entering Saturday's match.
Â
The three points earned in Saturday's victory propelled Marquette into sole possession of fourth place in the league standings with three games remaining. The Golden Eagles next face BIG EAST front-runner and No. 8-ranked Creighton on the road on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Central time in Omaha.
