Barber led the Golden Eagles with 22 kills, hitting at a .362 clip
MILWAUKEE – The No. 18 Marquette University volleyball team was able to force four sets, but eventually fell to 10th-ranked Creighton, 3-1 (20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 19-25) on Friday night at the Al McGuire Center, snapping an impressive nine-match winning streak.
Junior Allie Barber led the way for Marquette with 22 kills, hitting at a .362 clip. Senior Anna Haak contributed 13 kills and 11 digs for her seventh double-double performance of the season, while also reaching the 1,000 kill milestone combining stats from her time at Miami and Marquette.
Marquette (19-5, 9-2) fell by just five in a tightly played first set and narrowed the deficit to just a pair of points in the second set, falling 25-23. Set two also proved to be the best offensive showing for the Golden Eagles, checking in at a .333 hitting percentage.
The third set saw 15 total kills from the Marquette squad, who took advantage of a 5-0 run early on to set the tone. Haak rattled off seven kills in that set to help the Golden Eagles edge the Blue Jays, 25-22, and force the fourth set, though the Golden Eagles didn't have enough to head into a decisive fifth showing.
"I don't know if we can out-defend Creighton, they are really good defensive team and that has not been our strength," head coach Ryan Theis said. "I think we did some things better than the last time we played them and made some plays better, but I still think their defense held us under what we do and our defense didn't hold them. Creighton's hitters do a really good job of moving the ball around."
Junior Lauren Speckman contributed 31 assists, followed by Sarah Rose with 15 helpers. Martha Konovodoff tallied 21 digs while Speckman and Haak tied for second with 11 apiece.
Creighton (19-4, 11-0) was led by Jaali Winter with 25 kills at a .442 clip. She was one of four Blue Jays recording double-digit kills, who hit at a .331 clip as a team on the night.
The Golden Eagles welcome Providence to the Al McGuire Center tomorrow for a 6 p.m. Central time matchup.
