Volleyball sweeps Xavier in Cincinnati

Marquette hosts its final two regular season home games next weekend at the Al
CINCINNATI – The No. 18 Marquette University women's volleyball team picked up its second sweep of the weekend with a 25-15, 25-17, 25-13 takedown of Xavier on Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center in Cincinnati.
Allie Barber led the Golden Eagles (24-5, 14-2 BIG EAST) with 16 kills and four blocks, while Anna Haak hit .571 and landed 14 kills to go along with seven digs.
Marquette limited the Musketeers (10-17, 8-8 BIG EAST) to a .092 hitting percentage (27-18-98), while hitting .388 themselves.
Led by Barber's five kills, the Golden Eagles broke free from an early 6-6 tie in the first frame to take a commanding 15-8 lead before Xavier called its first timeout of the match. Marquette ended up taking the frame, 25-15, after hitting .448.
Barber led all players with seven kills in the first, while Jenna Rosenthal posted six and a pair of blocks. With Xavier attempting a late comeback, the redshirt junior landed two kills to put MU on the precipice of set point as the Musketeers took their final timeout, trailing 23-15.
With Lauren Speckman serving, the Golden Eagles jumped on the Musketeers early in the second set, scoring the first eight points before eventually building their lead to 12-1. Xavier rebounded to make it tighter down the stretch, but MU pulled out the frame, 25-17.
The third set started with a scary moment as Xavier setter McKena Estes went down as the first point was being contested after being hit in the head. The senior was attended to on the court for 20 minutes before being removed on a stretcher.
Play resumed in the third set after a brief warm-up period and Marquette pulled away for a 25-13 victory. MU closed out the frame on a 19-7 run after the stanza was tied 6-6.
The Golden Eagles resume action on Friday, Nov. 16 against Seton Hall at the Al McGuire Center at 7 p.m. Central time.
