Marquette student-athletes set record with 95 percent GSR in latest NCAA report
MILWAUKEE – The latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report released this week indicates a record 95 percent graduation rate for Marquette University student-athletes, an increase of two percentage points from the previous year and a five percent increase from three years prior.
Â
Six programs (women's basketball, men's cross country/track, men's golf, women's lacrosse, women's tennis, women's volleyball) reached 100 percent graduation rates, while 12 programs surpassed the federal graduation rate for all students.
Â
"Our student-athletes continue to do amazing things," said Marquette Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl. "They simply get it done in all phases of their lives. We are blessed to have a great team of professionals working behind the scenes to provide our student-athletes with the support and resources they need to be successful in a very challenging environment. Great teammates make for successful teams, beginning with our student-athletes and extending all the way through our professional staff."
Â
"We are overwhelmingly pleased with the academic performance of our student-athletes and very fortunate to have so many student-athletes with the same competitive spirit in the classroom as they display on the court or the field," said Executive Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services and Student Programs Adrienne Ridgeway. "We know that record numbers like this happen because of the commitment that Marquette makes to its student-athletes. We are grateful for the support that we receive from our coaches, administration, faculty and staff."
Â
The data released this week reflects graduation numbers among student-athletes who entered school in 2011. As a group, the 95 percent success rate during the latest four-year evaluation period is among the nation's leaders and far supersedes the 80 percent rate for the University's student body as a whole. It also rates seven percentage points higher than the national average and equals the mark set in 2007, which was the highest ever recorded for Marquette student-athletes.
Â
Since the NCAA began publishing GSR reports in 2005, Marquette has equaled or surpassed the 90-percent mark each time with increases in each of the past five years.
Â
The NCAA's Graduation Success Rate includes transfer student and student-athletes who leave in good academic standing, unlike the federal graduation rate, which does not count transfers. The GSR and federal rate calculations measure graduation over six years from the first-time college enrollment. Presidents and chancellors in all three NCAA divisions called for the Association to develop a measure of graduation success that better reflects transfer patterns in higher education.
Â
The federal graduation rate, while it is less inclusive than the GSR, provides the only measure of historic academic comparison between student-athletes and the general student body. By this standard, student-athletes consistently outperform nearly all their peers in the student body.
