Barber and Werch were named to the all-tournament team
OMAHA, Neb.--It was a thrilling night of volleyball as No. 16 Marquette met No. 9 Creighton in the BIG EAST Championship final for the second straight season and though the Golden Eagles won the first set, MU fell 3-1 (28-26, 22-25, 21-25, 21-25) on Saturday evening at D.J. Sokol Arena.
Â
Junior Allie Barber and sophomore Hope Werch were selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team and led Marquette (26-6) with 20 and 14 kills, respectively. Sophomore Sarah Rose and junior Lauren Speckman dished out 26 and 23 assists, respectively, while Rose tallied her fourth double-double of the season adding 11 digs.
Â
Sophomore Martha Konovodoff collected a match-high 19 digs as senior Anna Haak notched 16.
Â
The first set was a point-for-point contest with the score tied 22 times and 13 lead changes as Marquette earned the 28-26 win behind seven kills from Werch. In the second, the Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 12 points before mounting a comeback that fell just short and the Bluejays evened the match at one set apiece.
Â
Creighton claimed both the third and fourth sets with 25-21 scores.
Â
"We probably missed a few opportunities in the third set where we could have pulled ahead late," head coach Ryan Theis said. "A credit to Creighton for making some big plays to get that third game. We will see where the committee sends us and from here I expect each match to be this tough. If we can swing a couple points our way, I think we can still have our best season in program history."
Â
The Golden Eagles will wait for the NCAA Volleyball selection show to see their selection in the 2018 NCAA Volleyball championship where they will be making their eighth-consecutive appearance. The selection show will air on Sunday, Nov. 25 on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU. MU will host a watch party at the Union Sports Annex at 840 N. 16th Street. Doors open to the media and public at 7:00 CT.
