Allazia Blockton and Natisha Hiedeman combine for 45 points, set long-standing program records
MILWAUKEE – The nationally-ranked Golden Eagles never trailed as they made quick work of their crosstown foe Milwaukee, 83-74, while setting two long-standing program records in the process at the Klotsche Center on Wednesday night.
Â
Allazia Blockton and Natisha Hiedeman set the tone early on, combining for 19 of Marquette's 25 first-quarter points to spot the Golden Eagles (5-1) a 12-point advantage. MU led the rest of the way as Blockton finished with a game-high 28 points, leading four in double figures, while Hiedeman chipped in 17 to go along with six rebounds and four assists. The two would go on to set two significant records as well.
Â
Blockton's buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end of the first quarter tied Julie Sievers ('83) 35-year-old record of 721 made field goals and, with 3:12 remaining in the first half, surpassed the mark. The Milwaukee native ended the contest 11-for-19 from the field, including 4-for-5 from long range, and is just 49 points from breaking Marquette's all-time scoring record of 1,940 points currently held by Krystal Ellis ('09).
Â
Hiedeman, who entered the game just two 3-pointers shy of tying Lori Goerlitz's ('95) record of 221, did so on her first attempt of the second quarter. The Green Bay native also made four triples as the Golden Eagles converted 10-of-19 3-point attempts as a team.
Â
Marquette led the Panthers (2-5) by as many as 22 points midway through the third quarter. Erika Davenport poured in all 14 of her points in the second half, including eight in the final frame, to go along with a game-high eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Danielle King added 10 points, sealing the victory by going 6-for-6 at the charity stripe in the final 42 seconds.
Â
The Golden Eagles suffocating full-court press forced the Panthers into 25 turnovers, converting those into 32 points.
Milwaukee was led by Sydney Levy's 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 5-for-8 from downtown. The Panthers outscored MU, 29-20, in the fourth quarter to mount a mini-comeback, but the battle-tested Golden Eagles proved too much to overcome.
Â
Marquette is set to return home to the Al McGuire Center on Sunday, Dec. 2, hosting Michigan in a 4 p.m. Central time tip.
