Former MU players Liam Byrnes and Jacob Richard will play on a Team USA squad coached by Joe Amplo
MILWAUKEE – Former Marquette University men's lacrosse players Liam Byrnes and Jacob Richard, also a current MU assistant coach, will play for Team USA in Thursday's 2018 MLL All-Star Game against the MLL All-Stars at Harvard Stadium in Boston.
The game will be televised live at 6 p.m. Central time on ESPNews.
The pair will play for Marquette head coach Joe Amplo, who is an assistant coach with Team USA, which begins play at the 2018 FIL World Championships in Netanya, Israel on July 12.
Richard and Byrnes have been training with the U.S. team since Tuesday in Foxborough, Mass., but are not currently on the 23-man travel roster for the international event.
Playing for the Atlanta Blaze, Byrnes has posted career highs of 34 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers through nine games this season after an offseason trade from the Florida Launch. The West Islip, New York native was the 2016 BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a USILA Second Team All-American, and remains the only MU player in program history with over 200 career ground balls and 100 caused turnovers.
Richard has scored three goals and picked up five ground balls for the 6-4 Charlotte Hounds this season while playing alongside MU volunteer assistant coach and Team USA attackman Ryan Brown, who leads the team with 27 goals. Richard was a USILA Third Team All-American at Marquette as a senior in 2016.
Elsewhere in the MLL this season, Marquette's all-time leading scorer Ryan McNamara has played a big role offensively for the league-leading Dallas Rattlers, who enter the all-star break with an 8-2 record. McNamara has 16 goals and nine assists to rank third on the squad behind Jordan Wolf and Ty Thompson.
Zachary Melillo, who was recently signed by the Denver Outlaws from the MLL Player Pool, has yet to see game action.
