The Golden Eagles earn their fourth sweep of the season
ST. LOUIS – The Marcia E. Hamilton Classic continued at Chaifetz Arena on Saturday morning as the Marquette University volleyball team earned its second straight sweep in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-22) victory over Western Kentucky.
Junior Allie Barber recorded a match-high 12 kills with three blocks to lead Marquette (4-1), while redshirt senior Jenna Rosenthal had a stellar game hitting for 10 kills, no errors and a blistering .714 hitting percentage.
Junior setter Lauren Speckman and sophomore Sarah Rose dished out 20 and 13 assists, respectively, while Speckman, senior Anna Haak and sophomore Martha Konovodoff each collected nine digs.
Marquette overcame poor hitting in the first frame at just a .044 clip to win, 25-22 as the Lady Toppers had low hitting numbers as well, at a -.026, but the Golden Eagles reversed that in the second set hitting a combined .517. Through two sets Rosenthal had connected on eight kills with no errors for a blazing .727 hitting percentage.
Western Kentucky (3-3) challenged in the third set, hitting at a .346 percentage and keeping close to the Golden Eagles, staving off two match point plays before Rosenthal connected for the kill to secure the win.
The Lady Toppers were led by Sophia Cerino with nine kills as setter Taylor Bebout tallied a double-double with 23 assists and 10 digs.
The Golden Eagles have a final game tonight at 7 p.m. Central time when the squad takes on host, Saint Louis.
