Golden Eagles open with scrimmages against Maryland, Utah and Johns Hopkins
MILWAUKEE – Head coach Joe Amplo has announced the 2019 schedule for the Marquette University men's lacrosse team, including matchups with eight squads who participated in the 2018 NCAA tournament.
The Golden Eagles kick off the spring semester with scrimmages at Maryland on Jan. 19 and Utah on Jan. 26 before hosting Johns Hopkins in their first action at Valley Fields on Feb. 2. The exhibition with Hopkins is a return from last year's meeting in Baltimore, while MU is facing the Terrapins and Utes for the first time. The scrimmage against Utah will be the first action of the spring for the Utes, who are playing their first season as an NCAA Division I program in 2019.
Marquette begins the regular season with a home game against Bellarmine on Feb. 9 and then heads to Jacksonville for a Friday night matchup with head coach John Galloway and the Dolphins on Feb. 15. MU has played either BU or JU to open the regular season in each of the previous three seasons.
The Golden Eagles close out the month of February with a home date against Detroit Mercy on Feb. 23 and will travel to Dallas, Texas to take on Ohio State on March 2 at Southern Methodist University.
Cleveland State, the lone new addition to the regular season schedule, heads to Milwaukee for a March 9 game and Marquette will face Robert Morris on Tuesday, March 12 and Michigan on Saturday, March 16 over MU's spring break.
BIG EAST Conference action begins at 2018 NCAA tournament teams Georgetown and Villanova on March 23 and March 30, respectively, before Marquette hosts St. John's on April 6. The game against the Red Storm is in the middle of a span in which MU will play five of six contests away from Valley Fields.
Following the St. John's game, Marquette plays its annual midweek game at Notre Dame on Wednesday, April 10 before heading to Providence on April 13.
Instead of hosting Duke at Valley Fields this season, MU heads to Long Island to face the Blue Devils in Bethpage, New York on Saturday, April 20.
The Golden Eagles will close the regular season at home on April 27 against Denver, who will then host the BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship on May 2-4 at Peter Barton Stadium.
Marquette, which added 18 players to its roster this fall, must replace one starter from a 2018 team that went 6-8 and fell to then-No. 3 Denver in the semifinals of the 2018 BIG EAST Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship.
