MU sends trio to players to Milwaukee Tennis Classic
The Marquette University men's tennis team will send Alvaro Verdu to the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif., this weekend, while a portion of the roster will compete in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic from Sept. 20-23.
Verdu earned the invitation to the ITA event by claiming the BIG EAST Player of the Year Award last season after leading Marquette to its first-ever BIG EAST Championship. The singles format will play best two-out-of-three sets with no-ad scoring, tie-breaking at six games all.
"It's a well-deserved honor for Alvaro and Marquette's first representation in the event, " Director of Tennis and men's head coach Steve Rodecap said. "He will be competing in an elite field against some of the top players in the country. He has worked extremely hard to get to this point and I am excited to see it pay off for him."
Created in 2015, the Oracle ITA Masters has established itself as one of the premier events of the collegiate tennis season. The Oracle ITA Masters features singles draws of 32 for men and women, and a mixed doubles event with a 32-draw. Players are chosen based upon conference representation, similar to the NCAA Tournament.
Luis Heredia Gomez, Brett Meyers and Fran San Andres will represent the Golden Eagles at the 43rd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The players will compete at the Town Club, with the winner receiving a wild card into the main draw of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championship. For the first time in the tournament's history, the final will be held at the Al McGuire Center on the Marquette University campus.
Marquette opened the fall slate last weekend at the River Forest Collegiate Invitational, where six players competed. Freshman Shaddy Khalafallah tallied in a win in his collegiate debut.
The Golden Eagles return to action next weekend for the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Okla., before heading to Indiana the first weekend of October for the Purdue Fall Invite and Notre Dame Fall Classic.
