Barber and Haak led the Golden Eagles in double digit kills
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Marquette University volleyball team made quick work of Providence on Friday evening at Alumni Hall as the Golden Eagles swept the Friars, 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-21) in the BIG EAST Conference lidlifter.
Junior Allie Barber led Marquette (10-3, 1-0) with a match-high 16 kills, while senior Anna Haak threw down 12, while hitting at a .409 clip. Junior Lauren Speckman dished out 22 assists, while sophomore Martha Konovodoff nearly had a double-double with 10 assists and nine digs.
Marquette overcame a close start in the first set, leading to a 255-21 win behind four kills each from Barber and Haak, while the Golden Eagles closed the second frame on a 17-6 run and hit .517 combined. The third set was also close down the stretch with the teams tied, 15-15 before a burst from each squad as MU finished with a 25-21 victory, completing the sweep.
"Our offense was good tonight, but we still need to be better on defense," head coach Ryan Theis said. "Both left sides got going in the match, which was great to see, but I don't think we got it going from the service line like at the end of last weekend. We are on the road so that will always be tougher."
Providence (6-6, 0-1) was led by Allison Impellizeri with 10 kills and a .533 hitting percentage, while Allison Barber handed out 30 assists. The Golden Eagles combined for a .344 clip with five blocks, while the Friars turned in a .209 percentage and four blocks.
The Golden Eagles will travel to No. 10 Creighton to face the Bluejays on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. CT. The match will air live on FOX Sports Go.
