Jenna Rosenthal breaks the Marquette record for assisted blocks
MILWAUKEE – The 20th ranked Marquette University volleyball team took down Georgetown on Friday evening at Al McGuire Center as the Golden Eagles swept the Hoyas, 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-20) in the BIG EAST Conference home opener.
Junior Allie Barber led Marquette (11-4, 2-1) with 13 kills, while senior Anna Haak threw down seven with no errors, hitting at a .583 clip. Junior Lauren Speckman dished out 18 assists as sophomore Sarah Rose handed out 15 and sophomore Martha Konovodoff collected 13 digs.
Redshirt senior Jenna Rosenthal became Marquette's all-time leader in assisted blocks when she teamed with junior Madeline Mosher at 11-4 in the second frame. Rosenthal finished the night with four assisted blocks and now has 416 in her career.
"I think we did a really good job serving Georgetown out of system tonight," Rosenthal noted. "It actually makes blocking easier when they have fewer options and I think we did a good job containing Symone Speech, she is one of their high-level players and one of the high level players in the BIG EAST."
Marquette took control early in the first two sets and maintained a lead throughout, though the Golden Eagles overcame a close third set with the score tied twice, including at 15-15, but regrouped after a timeout, which led to a 25-20 win.
Georgetown (10-6, 3-1) was led by Iva Vujosevic with eight kills, while Margo Pivonka handed out 23 assists. The Golden Eagles combined for a .295 clip with 10 blocks, while the Hoyas turned in a .124 percentage and four blocks.
"We finally got some blocks tonight," head coach Ryan Theis said. "We have been working on it a lot for two weeks and we played a little bit better defense holding them to .125 efficiency wise, which is something we have been working on, so I was happy we were able to do that."
Marquette will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 when the squad hosts Villanova at 6 p.m. CT at the Al McGuire Center.
