Marquette opens the year at the site it hosted the 2017 BIG EAST Championships
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's and women's cross country teams kick off the 2018 season on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Vic Godfrey Open hosted by UW-Parkside.
The meet will take place at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Course, which is very familiar territory for the Golden Eagles, who hosted the 2017 BIG EAST Conference Championships there last October.
Â
That event produced fond memories for both teams as the women turned in its highest BIG EAST finish since 2005 after taking fourth place, while the men collected two All-BIG EAST performers in junior Daniel Pederson (eighth) and then-senior Alec Miller (17th) and the team registered its best-ever score at a BIG EAST meet with 129 points.
Â
Head coach Mike Nelson, who enters his 12th season at the helm, will send 16 athletes on each side to compete in Saturday's opener.
Â
Two seniors will captain teams that feature a young and exuberant roster that lost some of its top athletes to graduation, including both Alec and Aric Miller for the men and Alison, Jennifer and Jessica Parker for the women.
Â
This year, Jon Klaiber and Henry Mierzwa will guide the men's side, while Nora Keller and Mary Hanson will lead the women's team.
Â
After Saturday's effort at UW-Parkside, the team will gear up for the Badger Classic at UW-Madison on Friday, Sept. 14.
