Marquette Opens New Season at Badger Invitational

The Golden Eagles feature six returners, while three newcomers get their first swings this weekend
Marquette opens its new season, and five-event fall schedule, beginning this Sunday through Tuesday (Sept. 9-11) in the Badger Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin at University Ridge G.C. (Par 72, 7,294).
THE EVENT
The 12-team field includes Iowa State, Illinois State, Kansas, Marquette, Nevada, North Dakota, Northern Illinois, Rutgers, South Dakota, UAB, Xavier and host Wisconsin.Ā Iowa State and Nevada were at-large selections to the 2018 NCAA Men's Golf Championship regionals.
Tee times begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday and Monday off holes No. 1 and No. 10, and with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
MARQUETTE'S LINEUP
Lineup: Hunter Eichhorn, Oliver Farrell, Tyler Leach, Matt Murlick, Nate Thomson
Individuals: Austin Kendziorski, Charlie Maleki, Connor Brown
The Golden Eagles return all five of their starters from last season and the team's three First Team All-BIG EAST selections - Hunter Eichhorn, Oliver Farrell, and Matt Murlick - are part of the five-man lineup this weekend.Ā Eichhorn became the first league player to win BIG EAST Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year since 2013, while he and Murlick were at-large selections to NCAA Bryan (Texas) Regional play.
Tyler Leach and Nate Thomson make their debuts in the starting lineup for Marquette this weekend.Ā Leach won his second career individual WIAA Division 3 State Championship in June for Spring Valley High School, when he shot a two-round 150 (80-70) to rally from nine spots back on the leaderboard and win the title at University Ridge.Ā Thomson, a Greendale, Wisconsin native, returns home after two years at Belmont - he led the Bruins in scoring average last season (74.3) and was the team's low scorer in six of 10 events.
LAST SEASON AT THE BADGER INVITATIONAL
Marquette shot 17-under-par score for the tournament (289-277-281ā847) to finish in third place behind Texas A&M and Kansas.Ā Murlick (70-69-69ā208) and Austin Kendziorski (77-66-67ā210) led the way with then-career low event scores, finishing tied for fourth and sixth respectively.Ā The Golden Eagles made 55 birdies at University Ridge on the way to their third place finish.
UP NEXT
Marquette has just a four day break before opening play in the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms next Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 15-16).Ā The Golden Eagles set multiple school scoring records in last year's Northern Intercollegiate to win.
