The Golden Eagles have won nine consecutive matches
MILWAUKEE—The winning streak extends to nine matches for the 10th-ranked Marquette volleyball team as the Golden Eagles swept Providence, 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-18) on Friday night at the Al McGuire Center.
Senior Allie Barber connected on 11 kills with no errors to hit a career-high .688 clip in the match, while freshman Hannah Vanden Berg tallied nine kills and senior Gwyn Jones added six. Sophomore Claire Mosher and junior Sarah Rose dished out 16 and 12 kills, respectively as Rose added seven digs. Junior libero Martha Konovodoff collected a match-high 17 digs and classmate Hope Werch had a strong night serving as she compiled four aces.
"I think we started off a bit rusty since we hadn't played in 10 days," head coach Ryan Theis said. "I thought we worked through some of that. Allie (Barber) was exceptional out-of-system, which was great- she had had some struggles. In the second set we gave some points away and Providence earned some with a few blocks."
The Golden Eagles hit a stellar .440 mark in the first set en route to a 25-14 victory, but Providence responded with pressure in the second frame. The score was tied seven times and had four lead changes, while the Friars staved off Marquette set point on four occasions before Madeline Mosher snapped the streak with a kill to end the set.
Marquette stormed back out to an early lead in the third set and did not relinquish the lead, completing the sweep over Providence with a 25-18 win.
The Friars were led by Jennifer Leitman with 11 kills, while setter Allison Barber tallied a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs.
Marquette is back in action on Saturday for a top-15 showdown, hosting No. 13 Creighton at 6 p.m. CT. The Bluejays toppled DePaul, 3-0 on Friday afternoon and also own a 5-0 mark in the BIG EAST. The match will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, which can be seen on Caffeine.tv, YouTube and Twitter.
