Marquette Opens Play At ITA Midwest Regional

Main draw features Heredia Gomez, Smrek, Meyers

The Marquette University men's tennis team opened play at the ITA Midwest Regional on Thursday with qualifying singles draw action at Ohio State University.

A trio of players - Stefan Dragovic, Brandon Shanklin and Fran San Andres - were placed in the 64-player bracket. Dragovic claimed a straight-set win in his opener prior to falling in the second round and the same happened to senior Brandon Shanklin, who was eliminated by Notre Dame's Paul Gota 6-4, 7-5.

San Andres dropped his opening match Thursday morning.

Play continues on Friday with a final round of qualifying before main draw competition begins mid-morning. Seniors Luke Smrek and Brett Meyers and junior Luis Heredia Gomez were placed into the main bracket and will open action once the qualifiers have been placed.

Marquette will feature a trio of tandems in doubles play, highlighted by the 12^th-seeded combo of Smrek and Heredia Gomez.
