The Golden Eagles can secure at BIG EAST tournament berth with a win

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team heads to Wish Field in Chicago for its regular season finale on Thursday, Oct. 31 against DePaul.
The 3 p.m. Central time match airs live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Matt Menzl on the call from Lincoln Park. The contest can be accessed on the league's YouTube Channel, on Twitter or Caffeine TV.
The Golden Eagles, who sit in a tie for sixth in the BIG EAST Conference standings with 10 points, need a victory to secure a spot in the league quarterfinals, which begin Sunday at campus sites. MU would need Providence and Creighton losses to get in with a draw.
Marquette owns a 15-5-2 edge in the all-time series with DePaul and is unbeaten in its last three matches against the Blue Demons. MU is 6-3 against DePaul in Chicago and the two sides played to a scoreless draw in Milwaukee last season.
MARQUETTE (6-10-1): The Golden Eagles were unbeaten in four-straight matches prior to the Thursday, Oct. 24 loss to Xavier (2-1) on Senior Night … Alyssa Bombacino recorded MU's first hat trick since 2012 against Seton Hall (Oct. 13) and added another in the next match against Villanova (Oct. 20) … MU began the season with just three goals in its first seven games but had scored in eight of the previous nine prior to the shutout at Butler on Oct. 27 … Five of its first seven games overall were decided 1-0 … MU earned its first win of the season on Sept. 1, courtesy of Kylie Sprecher's 108th minute goal in double overtime … Sprecher's score was MU's first goal of the year, ending a stretch of 379:36 to start the year without a tally.
LAST TIME OUT: The Golden Eagles fell 3-0 at Butler on Sunday after surrendering three first half goals to the Bulldogs. Butler outshot MU, 17-7, and secured at least a home game in the BIG EAST quarterfinals with the victory. Sophomore Katrina Wetherell fired four of Marquette's seven shots on the day and Maddy Henry made three saves in net.
DEPAUL (7-7-3): The Blue Demons fell 2-1 at Xavier in their most recent contest after a 1-0 upset overtime victory over then-No. 14 Georgetown at Wish Field on Oct. 24 … Morgan Turner scored her team-leading eighth goal of the year to lift the Blue Demons over the Hoyas in their second win over a ranked foe in 2019 … DePaul began the year with three losses and then went 3-1-2 before entering BIG EAST play … In addition to the win over the Hoyas, the Blue Demons also defeated then-No. 11 Kansas, 1-0, on Sept. 6 before a loss to No. 7 South Carolina by the same score on Sept. 8.
MARQUETTE AIMS AT BIG EAST TOURNAMENT RETURN
• The Golden Eagles did not compete in a conference postseason tournament in 2018 for the first time since their inaugural season in 1993 but sit tied for sixth in the current BIG EAST standings with one match remaining. MU has secured 10 points and sits in a tie with Providence but fell to the Friars in a head-to-head matchup. Marquette is in the tournament with a win on Thursday and with a draw would need losses by PC and Creighton. The league's top six teams make the conference tournament with the top two receiving byes into the semifinals, which will be held this season at Creighton.
BOMBACINO WITH MU'S FIRST HAT TRICK SINCE 2012
• Sophomore Alyssa Bombacino entered the Oct. 13 match at Seton Hall with four career goals and left with her first career hat trick. The Naperville, Illinois native then added her second hat trick in MU's next game against Villanova on Oct. 20. Bombacino's hat trick at Seton Hall was the first for a MU player since M Club Hall of Famer Maegan Kelly did so on Sept. 30, 2012 in a 5-0 win over Cincinnati.
GOLDEN EAGLES CLAIM 100TH BIG EAST VICTORY
• Marquette played its first season as a BIG EAST member in 2005 and earned its 100th league win on Oct. 20 against Villanova in its 15th year of conference action. The Golden Eagles have accumulated a record of 100-35-14 in BIG EAST action, which includes six regular season conference titles and a pair of tournament championships in 2012 and 2013. MU went a remarkable 39-1-1 in BIG EAST play in the four seasons from 2010-13.
