The Marquette University men's basketball team (0-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) opens its 103rd season of varsity competition on Tuesday, Nov. 5 when the squad hosts Loyola Maryland (0-0, 0-0 Patriot League) in the 2019-20 lidlifter at Fiserv Forum. FOX College Sports/FS Wisconsin will feature the national television broadcast, with Chris Vosters (play-by-play) and Dickey Simpkins (analyst) calling the action.  Following Tuesday night's action, the Golden Eagles will host No. 23/22 Purdue on Wednesday, Nov. 13 in the Gavitt Tip-Off Games series.
MU Hoping To Continue Opening Success
Marquette has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success on opening night and hopes to continue that trend in 2019-20 when the team faces Loyola Maryland in the first game of the year.
The Golden Eagles are 86-16 (.843) all-time in campaign lidlifters and have claimed 26 of their last 28 overall. Â Marquette had an impressive streak of 29 years in which it started 1-0, dating from 1960-61 to 1988-89.
MU, which will be facing the Greyhounds for the first time in program history, is 13-0 all-time versus programs currently in the Patriot League.
Golden Eagles Look For Postseason Return
The 2019-20 campaign will be the sixth under head coach Steve Wojciechowski, who has led the program to three-straight postseason appearances (2017 - NCAA, 2018 - NIT, 2019 - NCAA).
The Golden Eagles have claimed a total of 97 victories since Wojciechowski took the helm prior to the 2014-15 season, including three 20-win seasons. MU's last run of at least four postseason trips came 2010-13 and was capped by a share of the BIG EAST Conference regular season title in 2012-13.
MU Faces Challenging Non-League Slate
Marquette annually utilizes a quality non-league schedule to prepare the team for the rigors of BIG EAST play and 2019-20 continues that trend.
Following the opener, MU will play back-to-back Big Ten opponents in No. 23/22 Purdue before traveling to rival Wisconsin. Â Davidson, the team's opening opponent in the Orlando Invitational, is receiving votes in both of the national polls, as is potential second-round foe USC.
The Golden Eagles will also travel to Kansas State to complete a home-and-home series that started in 2018-19.
Howard Earns Plethora Of Preseason Honors
Senior guard Markus Howard is poised to become the program's all-time leading scorer and his reputation as one of the nation's top offensive threats has translated into a plethora of preseason accolades.
The Chandler, Arizona, native owns 1,955 career points now trails all-time leading scorer Jerel McNeal (1,985 - 2005-09) by 30 points.
Howard became just the fifth player in BIG EAST history to collect 1,000 career points in league play in three seasons. Â He joined Pat Garrity (Notre Dame), Dominique Jones (USF), Richard Hamilton (UConn) and Ray Allen (UConn) in the exclusive group and has a chance to become the league's top scorer (Lawrence Moten, Syracuse, 1,405).
