Prep Standout claimed Gold medal with USA Basketball
The Marquette University men's basketball team has signed nationally ranked prep standout Dawson Garcia (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS), head coach Steve Wojciechowski announced Wednesday afternoon.
Garcia, a 6-11, 220-pounder, will arrive on campus next summer and have four seasons of eligibility with the Golden Eagles.
"We are so excited the Garcia family has chosen to join Marquette University," Wojciechowski said. "Dawson is one of the top players in the United States. He's a position-less player with great versatility and competitiveness and can be one of the top players throughout his time at Marquette."
A consensus top-50 recruit nationally, Garcia is ranked 31st by 247Sports.com, 36th by Rivals.com and 45th by ESPN.com. He is also rated as high as fourth in the nation at his position.
Garcia was a member of the 2019 USA Basketball Men's 3x3 U18 World Cup Team that claimed an historic first gold medal for the USA with a 7-0 record in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. He scored a team-high 52 points, which ranked tied for first among all competitors in the 20-team field. He was named most valuable player of the 2019 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup and the 2019 USA Basketball Men's 3x3 U18 National Championship. Garcia also participated in the 2019 USA Men's Junior National Team minicamp in October.
A three-year varsity letterwinner, Garcia averaged 27.5 points (10th in the state) and 11.0 rebounds per game as a junior in 2018-19 and helped lead Prior Lake High School to the Minnesota Class 4A, Section 2 championship game. The Lakers won a program-best 25 games (25-4) and appeared in their first-ever sectional final as a Class 4A program.
Garcia has participated on the summer league circuit with D1 Minnesota under head coach Al Harris.
Along with top-100 signees Osasere Ighodaro (Chandler, AZ/Desert Vista HS) and Justin Lewis (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic), Garcia is included in a nationally ranked recruiting class by the Marquette coaching staff.
