PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – The Marquette University men's soccer team fell to the Providence Friars, 2-0, in the BIG EAST tournament quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles end their season with an 8-9-1 record (4-5-0 BIG EAST).
The Friars scored their first goal in the 29th minute off a corner kick. Esben Wolf made a run to the back post and tapped home the pass from Joao Serrano, who picked up his team-leading seventh assist of the year.
MU had a couple of scoring chances towards the end of the first half but failed to capitalize and PC took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
10 minutes into the second half, sophomore goalkeeper Cedrik Stern put his abilities to the test after the Golden Eagles were called for a foul in the box. Serrano took the penalty kick for the Friars and tried to place a shot in the lower left corner but Stern made a tremendous diving save to keep it a one goal game.
PC added its second goal of the game in the 62nd minute when a defensive miscue by the MU back line led to a tally by PC's Trevor Dabock.
The Friars tallied their final goal of the match in the 79th minute when leading scorer Paulo Lima laced a right-footed shot into the left corner of the net to put his team up 3-0.
The Golden Eagles were outshot 13-5 on the afternoon and Stern saved a game-high four shots for MU. Seniors Josh Coan and Connor Alba tallied two shots apiece to lead their team.
