MILWAUKEE ā Marquette University junior high jumper Daniel Armstrong has qualified for the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held on March 8-9 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
It is his second time qualifying for the event in as many years after a 15th-placeĀ finish at last year's indoor championships. The men's high jump will be competed at 3:30 p.m. Central time on Saturday, March 9 and live coverage of the day's events on ESPN3 will begin at 4 p.m. CT.
Armstrong won the BIG EAST men's high jump indoor title for the third time on Feb. 23, but it was his jump on Dec. 7 at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside that stood up throughout the indoor campaign as his qualifying mark. That leap of 2.21 meters (7 feet, 3 inches) is a lifetime best and places him second all-time in Marquette history.
The height proved to be just enough to break into the nation's top-16 slots available to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.
The Michigan City, Indiana, native counts his name among a distinguished list of successful Marquette high jumpers. In addition to Armstrong's NCAA Second Team All-America showing at last year's NCAA Championship, he joins former All-Americans Wally Ellenson, Ed Burke and Ken Wiesner.
Ed Burke was a two-time AAU All-American in the indoor high jump in 1936 and 1937. At the 1937 meet held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Burke set the indoor world high jump record with a height of 6 feet, 9.25 inches. He then earned NCAA All-American status in 1938.
Ken Wiesner, who broke the world indoor high jump record on three separate occasions, was a three-time NCAA high jump champion. He won titles in succession from 1944-46, and on his third and final trip to nationals, he successfully cleared a winning height of 6 feet, 8 3/8 inches.
Wiesner's lifetime-best mark was 6 feet, 11 inches and he went on to compete for the United States in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, where he won the silver medal.
Armstrong has won a total of five BIG EAST men's high jump crowns (three indoor, two outdoor) in addition to last year's indoor All-America recognition.
