The Golden Eagles are a No. 5 seed for the second time in program history
MILWAUKEE -Â The Marquette University women's basketball team has earned an at-large selection as the No. 5 seed in the Chicago Region of the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship and will face 12th-seeded Rice in the first round on Friday, March 22 in College Station, Texas. The game will air live at 1 p.m. Central time on ESPN2.
The Golden Eagles (26-7) have earned three straight berths to the NCAA tournament for the first time since making four straight appearances from 1997-2000. They are making their 12th appearance in program history overall.
Marquette is 0-1 as a No. 5 seed, which matches the highest seed in program history, earned in 2017.
Should MU win its first-round game, it will face the winner of host Texas A&M and Wright State.
The Golden Eagles are 5-11 all-time in the NCAA tournament after winning their first-round game last season as the No. 8 seed over No. 9 Dayton, 84-65, before falling to top-seeded Louisville in the second round. The win over Dayton marked the first NCAA victory for head coach Carolyn Kieger. The program has never advanced past the second round.
Marquette won the BIG EAST regular season title for the second consecutive season and reached the BIG EAST Tournament title game for a third straight year, where it fell to DePaul.
