Marquette pair honored for win at No. 14 Georgetown
NEW YORK – Goalie John Hulsman is the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week, while face-off specialist Thomas Washington earned the league's top freshman weekly honors, it was announced Monday afternoon.
The pair led the Golden Eagles (5-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) to a 9-8 victory over then-No. 14 Georgetown in the league opener for both programs on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Hulsman posted a season-best 12 saves and the MU defense limited the BIG EAST's highest-scoring offense to just eight goals. Many of Hulsman's stops came from point-blank range as the Golden Eagles picked up their fifth one-goal victory all-time against the Hoyas and fourth straight in the series. The sophomore helped MU hold Georgetown to its lowest scoring output of the season.
Washington, who had missed most of the last six games due to injury, won 10-of-17 face-offs and picked up three ground balls. He helped the Golden Eagles go on an 8-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to wrest control of the contest. Washington won 5-of-7 faceoffs in the pivotal second quarter as MU made its run.
The honors are the first weekly BIG EAST accolades for both players.
Marquette resumes league action on Saturday, March 30 at Villanova Stadium against Villanova (5-4).
