Heredia Gomez clinches team victory
The Marquette University men's tennis team (7-5) picked up a 5-2 victory over rival DePaul (8-7) Saturday night in BIG EAST action at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The victory allowed the Golden Eagles to extend their home winning streak to 16 matches dating back to the start of the 2017-18 campaign.
DePaul opened the match by claiming the doubles point, winning at the No. 2 and 3 positions.
MU started strong in singles play, claiming first sets in five of the six matchups. Junior Brandon Shanklin, inserted late into the lineup at No. 6, trailed 5-2 in the first set before rallying for a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Junior Luke Smrek was the first on the board for MU and classmate Brett Meyers also had a straight-set win, but the clinching point came down to sophomore Luis Heredia Gomez at No. 3. He rallied late in the first set and then pulled away in the second to secure the win.
