MU alum led program to three NCAA appearances in five years
Former Marquette University women's basketball head coach Carolyn Kieger has accepted the head coaching position at Penn State.
In five seasons as head coach of the Golden Eagles, Kieger led the program to national prominence, leading MU to three-consecutive BIG EAST titles (one tournament and two regular season) and NCAA tournament appearances. She guided the program to its first top-10 ranking in history (2018-19) and complied three consecutive 20-win seasons, including a program-record 27 victories in the 2018-19 campaign.
"It's difficult to express how thankful we are for not only what Carolyn did for our women's basketball program and athletics department, but the entire University," Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl said. "She has been a tremendous ambassador for the Marquette family since her time as a student-athlete here and we wish her all the best as she takes the next step in her career."
Kieger leaves Marquette with a 99-64 overall record and a 56-34 mark in BIG EAST play. She was the 2018 Co-BIG EAST Coach of the Year and saw Allazia Blockton and Natisha Hiedeman earn BIG EAST Player of the Year accolades in back-to-back seasons.
During her tenure, Kieger coached 10 all-conference players, four All-BIG EAST Freshman Team selections, the 2016 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year (Blockton), the 2016 BIG EAST Most Improved Player (McKayla Yentz) and the 2019 BIG EAST Sixth-Woman of the Year (Blockton).
A national search for Marquette's next head coach will begin immediately.
