Gabriel, Garcia and Horning honored after Marquette upset No. 24 Georgetown
NEW YORK – Three Marquette University women's lacrosse players won major awards on the final BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced on Tuesday.
ÂFor the fifth time this season, senior Grace Gabriel nabbed the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week nod. Shea Garcia notched her third BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award while junior goalkeeper Jules Horning earned her first mention as BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
ÂGabriel rattled off five second-half goals, including what would become the game-winner against No. 24 Georgetown on Saturday. The win marked the program's first over a ranked opponent and secured the No. 2 seed as they host the BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep. The Lancaster, New York native also added in a pair of caused turnovers, two draw controls and a ground ball in the victory.
ÂGarcia helped to erase a four-goal deficit for the Golden Eagles in the upset victory over the Hoyas. The freshman put all four of her shots on the mark and her two tallies tied the score for Marquette. She caps off her inaugural regular season as a Golden Eagle top-five in points, goals and assists.
ÂHorning held down the defensive effort for Marquette with a season-high 18 saves, one shy of her career-high and eight more than her previous best for the year. She tallied 11 saves in the second half alone to help the Golden Eagles claim the upset. The junior faced 49 shots on the afternoon.
ÂThe trio of accolades marks the first time this season where three Golden Eagles collected major awards. The last time a pair occurred was when Gabriel and Garcia earned BIG EAST Midfielder and Freshman of the Week, respectively, on April 9.
ÂMarquette begins the postseason on Thursday as the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Championship and will take on No. 3 Georgetown in the 6 p.m. semifinal matchup at Valley Fields. The contest will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
