Grace Gabriel and Shea Garcia earn league awards following first BIG EAST win
NEW YORK – Marquette University women's lacrosse senior Grace Gabriel and freshman Shea Garcia earned BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week and BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday.
Gabriel set a new career-high points mark after scoring five goals and adding in two assists for seven points in Marquette's 16-3 win over Butler on Saturday. The senior also collected five draw controls to reach the 100 mark on the season, now seven shy of the single-season program record she set just last year. Gabriel also scooped up one ground ball and caused a turnover in the victory.Â
Garcia added in another hat trick for Marquette – her sixth overall and second consecutive – in the team's first BIG EAST win of the season. She went two-for-two on free-position goal opportunities and raked up three ground balls, as well. The freshman has now put 44-of-50 shots on goal (88 percent) so far this year, the best efficiency of any Marquette attack.
It's Gabriel's fourth BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week nod and seventh overall mention on the honor roll this season, while Garcia repeats as BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for her third overall honor roll tab this year.
Marquette continues conference action this Saturday at Old Dominion. First draw is set for Noon Central time.
