MILWAUKEE – Former Marquette University head men's lacrosse coach Joe Amplo has accepted the head coaching position at the United States Naval Academy.
Amplo departs Marquette after eight years as its lone head coach in program history, having guided the Golden Eagles to a pair of BIG EAST Tournament triumphs and two NCAA tournament appearances. In seven seasons, MU accrued an overall record of 52-53 under Amplo, including an 11-5 mark in 2016 on its way to a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Championship.
"We appreciate all Joe has done in building the Marquette program from that first season in 2013 into a recognizable name in lacrosse," said Marquette University Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl. "As our first head coach, Joe played an important role in establishing the foundation for our men's lacrosse program, which will not be forgotten. We wish him, his wife Jen, and daughters Sophia, Charlotte and Lily nothing but the best as they move on from Marquette."
A member of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Committee and an assistant coach on the U.S. Men's Lacrosse National Team, Amplo mentored six USILA All-Americans at MU and helped 13 individuals become pro lacrosse draftees.
"We look forward to building on the successful early stages of our program's history and will cast a wide net in the search for our next coach, aligning closely with the mission and values of Marquette University." Scholl said. "With our current student-athletes, the AHPRC and an indoor competition venue, we are extremely excited for the future of the men's lacrosse program."
A national search for Marquette's next head coach begins immediately.
