Tanner Thomson is the highest-drafted player in program history at 12th overall
PHILADELPHIA - Former Marquette University men's lacrosse players Tanner Thomson and John Wagner were each selected among the top 34 picks in the 2019 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft on Tuesday evening.
Thomson became the first player in Marquette history to be selected in the first round when he was picked 16th overall by the Saskatchewan Rush. Wagner went with the first pick of the third round (34th overall) to the New York Riptide.Â
Thomson, a 2019 All-BIG EAST First Team selection, finished second on the Golden Eagles with 38 points as a redshirt senior and led the squad with 26 goals. The Toronto native started the season on attack before moving back into the midfield midway through the year. Thomson end his MU career fifth in program history in points (93) and goals (65) and sixth in assists (28).
Wagner earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors after leading the Golden Eagles with 39 points on 21 goals and a team-high 18 assists as a senior. The St. Davids, Ontario native earned first team honors in 2018 and is the reigning two-time BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winner for men's lacrosse. Wagner ended his Marquette career third in points (109) and goals (77), fourth in assists (32) and second in game-winning scores (seven).
The pair each made their Major League Lacrosse debuts over the summer, Wagner with the Chesapeake Bayhawks and Thomson on the Atlanta Blaze alongside former MU teammate and 2016 NLL draftee Liam Byrnes.
Thomson and Wagner are the fifth and sixth players in Marquette history to be selected in the NLL draft, following Byrnes, Kyle Whitlow, Tyler Melnyk and Andrew Smistad. Melnyk was also picked by the Rush in 2014 and was a member of an NLL championship squad.
