MILWAUKEE – Attackman Jake Stegman of the Marquette University men's lacrosse team was named the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week for the first time in his career on Wednesday afternoon.
The Naperville, Illinois native scored two goals and added four assists at Drexel on Saturday, Feb. 29. His six points is one shy of the Marquette freshman record of seven set by Conor Gately in 2013 and his assist total is one off the MU program record of five.
Stegman scored his first goal to give the Golden Eagles a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter against the Dragons and scored his final goal to tie the game at 8-8 in the third quarter.
He is the second MU freshman to earn the league's rookie of the week honor in 2020, joining Chris Kirschner, who was recognized on Feb. 17. Freshman defenseman Mason Woodward was honored on the USILA Team of the Week on Feb. 4 for his play in the season opener at Cleveland State during a week the BIG EAST did not give weekly recognition.
Stegman, along with classmates Kirschner and Devon Cowan, are part of the only all-freshman starting attack unit in NCAA Division I. Kirschner (15 points), Stegman (12) and Cowan (11) are MU's top three point producers this season and Stegman leads the Golden Eagles with eight assists.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, March 7 in the first game of a doubleheader at Valley Fields against Robert Morris at 11 a.m. Central time.
