Former consensus top-35 prep recruit spent 2019-20 at Ohio St.
The Marquette University men's basketball team has announced the addition of guard D.J. Carton (Bettendorf, IA/Ohio State) to the program, head coach Steve Wojciechowski announced Thursday afternoon.
Carton, a 6-2, 190-pound guard, spent this 2019-20 campaign at Ohio State and will arrive on campus this fall and have three seasons of eligibility with the Golden Eagles.
"We are excited to welcome D.J. to the Marquette basketball family," Wojciechowski said. "We are looking forward to helping him reach his vast potential, both on and off the court. Marquette fans are going to love this young man."
Carton appeared in 20 games (three starts) for the Buckeyes, averaging 10.4 points (third on the team) and 2.8 rebounds per game. In 23.9 minutes per night, he shot 47.7 percent from the floor, 40.0 percent from behind the 3-point line and 75.9 percent from the charity stripe. He reached double figures in scoring on 13 occasions and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Dec. 23.
"I chose Marquette because of the relationship I have been able to develop with Coach Wojo," Carton said. "I think he understands me and can bring the best out of me, on and off the court. I am excited to be a Golden Eagle and play for the city of Milwaukee."
A consensus top-35 recruit as a senior in high school, Carton was rated 33rd by Rivals.com, 34th by 247Sports.com and 35th on ESPN.com.
Carton was named Iowa's Mr. Basketball in 2018-19 after averaging 24.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 6.0 assists per contest at Bettendorf High School. He helped lead the Bulldogs to 21 victories and a share of the league title that season and was a first team all-state and all-conference selection his final two seasons. As a junior, he averaged a school-record 26.3 points per game to go along with 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per outing.
