Marquette Athletics to unveil Metcalfe Senior Awards and SAAC honors

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will release its annual award winners, beginning Wednesday morning through the main athletics accounts on Twitter and Instagram.
In addition to the President's Award, combining academic and athletic excellence, the University annually recognizes seniors with the Ralph H. Metcalfe Senior Awards, honoring the contributions of one of the greatest student-athletes in MU history, Olympic champion and world's fastest man Ralph Metcalfe.
The six Metcalfe awards honor male and female student-athletes in three categories: academic and athletic excellence and service to others.
Marquette will also announce the winners of its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Awards: For the Love of the Game, Cura Personalis and the Magis Team Spirit Cup.

Ralph H. Metcalfe Senior Awards
About Ralph H. Metcalfe:
Ralph H. Metcalfe was known as the world's fastest human from 1932-34. Metcalfe was the NCAA champion in the 100- and 200-yard events in 1932-34 and he broke or tied every world record from 40-220 yards. For five consecutive years (1932-36), he captured the AAU 200-meter title, the Central Collegiate Conference 100- and 220-yard crowns and the Drake Relays 100-yard honors in each of his three varsity seasons at Marquette.
Metcalfe served as senior class president and was the captain of the MU track team in 1934. He placed second in the 100 meters and third in the 200 meters in the 1932 Olympics and came back in the 1936 Olympics to finish second in the 100 and help the U.S. win gold in the 400-meter relay.
After his college career, he joined the armed forces and served in World War II. After he got out of the army, he went go on to a life of public service and was a congressman for the state of Illinois. He was instrumental in the month of February being recognized as Black History Month.
He was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1975 and an inaugural member of the M Club Hall of Fame in 1972.

Men's Soccer
- The team made its second consecutive BIG EAST tournament appearance under 14th-year head coach Louis Bennett, marking the first time since 2012-13 the team has made back-to-back postseason trips.
- MU had four All-BIG EAST honorees for the second-straight season: Patrick Seagrist (first team), Luka Prpa (second team), Josh Coan (third team), Connor Alba (third team)
- Senior defender Patrick Seagrist finished third overall in the BIG EAST in assists (7).
- Senior forward Josh Coan finished in the top 10 in the conference in points (16), goals (6), shots (57) and points per game (0.89).
- Four Golden Eagles earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in a season for the first time in program history (Coan, Prpa, Cukaj, Sunesson).
- Patrick Seagrist was the highest MLS SuperDraft pick in program history (10th overall, New York Red Bulls) and started the first three games of the season for the Red Bulls.

- Frank Pelaez, a former 19-year MU assistant coach, was hired in December as the team's new head coach and brought in assistant coaches Steve Bode and Erin Scott.
- MU went 6-11-1 (3-5-1 BIG EAST) in 2019.
- Sophomore Alyssa Bombacino paced MU with 15 points on seven goals and an assist in 2019. She recorded hat tricks in consecutive games at Seton Hall (Oct. 13) and against Villanova (Oct. 20) to become the first MU player to post a hat trick since 2012.
- Senior Maddy Henry became MU's all-time saves leader in the season opener at Colorado State and became the first player at MU to reach 300 career saves.
- The win over Villanova on Oct. 20 was MU's 100th BIG EAST Conference victory.

- Marquette earned a ninth-consecutive berth to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round of the tournament for the fifth time in program history.
- The Golden Eagles tallied 28 wins in 2019, matching a program record for most victories in a season.
- Marquette defeated No. 4 Wisconsin, 3-2 in September, which marked the highest-ranked program the Golden Eagles have defeated and marked the first time in program history MU topped Wisconsin.
- MU was ranked as high as No. 7 in the country this season, a program-best ranking.
- Senior Allie Barber became the all-time kills leader on Nov. 15 in a win over Georgetown and finishes her Marquette career with 1,871 kills.
- Barber was named the volleyball 2019 Academic All-American Team Member of the Year.
- Barber was named the unanimous BIG EAST Player of the Year for the second time in her career and became just the fourth player in 30 years to repeat as BIG EAST POY.

- Both teams enjoyed breakthrough seasons on the course, never finishing lower than sixth in the seven meets (including the BIG EAST Championships) prior to the NCAA Regionals.
- 36 Marquette University cross country student-athletes achieved new personal records in either the 5k, 6k, 8k or 10k races this season.
- Seniors Daniel Pederson and Caitlin McGauley earned BIG EAST Male and Female XC Athletes of the Week, respectively, on Oct. 1, marking the first time in program history two Marquette XC student-athletes swept the athlete of the week awards.
- The Marquette men's cross country team tied its best-ever finish at the BIG EAST Championships, placing fourth with a program-low 99 points. The women's team placed sixth for the second straight year with 149 points.
- For the first time in program history, the MU men had three All-BIG EAST honorees, led by senior Ryan Burd, who placed 15th with a time of 26:27.7. Fellow seniors Daniel Pederson (26:36.7) and Brad Eagan (26:39.6) took 18th and 19th, respectively. Burd and Eagan earned their first all-conference nod as Golden Eagles while Pederson took home his third straight All-BIG EAST award.
- Senior captain Caitlin McGauley (22:41.8) paced the women's team to its second straight sixth place finish at the conference championships by taking 19th, earning her first ever All-BIG EAST honor. Sophomore Lauren Neiheisel (23:05.8) and junior Emily Foley (23:14.2) placed 26th and 29th, respectively, placing three MU women in the top 30 overall.

- The Marquette men's team took second at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships for the sixth straight season (163 points).
- The Marquette women's team placed second as well with 112 points, their second runner-up finish in the past three years.
- Joe Keys (5,667 points) broke his own heptathlon school record by over 300 points. He qualified for nationals, marking the third straight year a Golden Eagle men's athlete has qualified. He didn't get to compete, however, because of cancelations due to COVID-19.
- At the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, MU student-athletes achieved:

- Zachariah Murray's time of 47.98 in the 400m set the school record for the event.
- Samuel Johnson (6.80) hit the No. 1 all-time mark at Marquette in the 60-meter dash with his performance at the John Tierney Classic (Jan. 18).
- Julie Clayton set school and facility records with her latest PR in the pole vault, winning the event with a height of 3.93 m/12-10.72 ft.
- Nick Quandt (5.01 m/16-5.25 ft) set the men's pole vault school record at the Panther Tune-Up (Feb. 22)

Women's Basketball
- Marquette finished the season with a 24-8 record under first-year head coach Megan Duffy. It was the fourth straight 20-win season, only the second time in program history MU had four straight 20-win campaigns.
- The Golden Eagles exceeded expectations finishing second in BIG EAST play after being picked ninth in the preseason coaches' poll.
- MU advanced to its fourth consecutive BIG EAST title game.
- The Golden Eagles went 13-2 on their home court this season, including a perfect 9-0 mark in BIG EAST games.
- MU earned a top-25 win over then-No. 16 DePaul to conclude the regular season. It was head coach Megan Duffy's first ranked win in her career.

- Senior attacker Megan Menzuber finished her career with 123 points. She became the 10th Golden Eagle in program history to hit the 100-point mark.
- Menzuber set a single-game program record with seven goals in her final game at Marquette on March 11 at Detroit Mercy.
