Viviano played in 40 games at MU from 2016-20
MILWAUKEE - Marquette University women's lacrosse head coach Meredith Black has added former player Kate Viviano as the team's student assistant coach, she announced Monday. Viviano joins associate head coach Caitlin Fifield, assistant coach Emilia Ward and volunteer assistant Mike Storts on the coaching staff.
Viviano played for MU from 2016-20 and served as the team's captain for the 2020 season. She appeared in 40 games throughout her career as a Golden Eagle, starting in 26 of them. She returned from a 2019 knee injury and started in all 10 games on defense last year, causing seven turnovers, picking up two ground balls and providing valuable leadership to the defensive unit.
A 2019 graduate in finance from MU, Viviano began her master's degree in management during the 2019-20 academic year. She'll continue taking graduate classes as she works with the team in 2020-21.
"I'm very excited for the opportunity to stay a part of the program that has taught me so much," Viviano said. "I really enjoyed my five years as a player in the program, but now I'm ready to do everything I can to help out our current players as a member of the coaching staff.
Coach Black believes that Viviano will continue mentoring the current student-athletes on the team and add significant value on the staff.
"We are very excited to welcome Kate Viviano back to the program as our student coach," Black said. "She's proved to have an extremely high lacrosse IQ and she will add a ton of value to our program on the coaching side."
The Golden Eagles were 6-4 in the 2020 season before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the season. MU's last game on March 11 was an 11-goal victory over Detroit Mercy as it tied a single-game program-record in goals with 23.Â
MU also took home wins in 2020 against Canisius, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Fresno State and Niagara. The season was canceled before BIG EAST play was scheduled to begin on March 14.Â
The 2021 season is currently slated to begin during the first week of February.
