Weekly feature highlights former players
Marquette men's tennis players are scattered across the world and our new Alumni Spotlight feature will allow us to provide personal and professional updates on the student-athletes who represented the University on the court and continue to be ambassadors today.
Logon Collins | 2010-14 | Tulsa, Okla.
Current Location:Â Oklahoma City, OK
Employer/Profession: I am working as a Commercial Lender for CrossFirst Bank. After graduating Marquette, I took a Credit Analyst position with BOK Financial in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Shortly after moving back to Tulsa, I took a promotion that moved me to OKC to pursue a sales/management position with BOK.Â
Last year, after working for BOK for five years, I took a position with CrossFirst Bank to work as their Commercial Lending Officer. I am in charge of managing the bank's existing client base, along with bringing in additional lending relationships to the bank. I help business owners grow their investments through the use of various credit products like term loans, revolving lines of credit, syndicated facilities, and cash management services.
What I remember best about Marquette:  I will never forget the miserable 6 a.m. workouts in the fall season - those were some of the toughest workouts I have ever done. Todd Smith really pushed us to be stronger mentally and physically in those workouts. I hated them at the time, but I really do miss them now. I was in some of the best shape of my life thanks to Todd and I really grew closer to my teammates through the process. Although, there is one thing I will never miss from those 6 a.m. workouts - the Beep Test.
There are a few hard-fought duel matches I will always remember. A couple of those include our big 4-3 win over Denver my senior year (that got us ranked in the top 50) and our come-from-behind 4-3 wins against DePaul on its home court (both in my sophomore and senior year). I can still clearly visualize Dan Mamalat's unreturnable serve (in the 3rd set tiebreaker) that clinched our win against Denver and my perfect service game that closed out DePaul 7-5, 7-5 (my sophomore year).Â
Aside from tennis and the workouts, my fondest school memories were from my freshman year living in the Abbottsford Hall dorms. I met some of my best friends in that dorm that I still keep in touch with to this day. We had a lot of fun times between all the movie nights, super smash brothers battles on Nintendo 64, nerf gun fights, and hallway sports.Â
Fun Fact:  I never could figure out how to hit a topspin backhand in college. I developed my serve and forehand to compensate for my backhand weakness. I also got really efficient at slicing my backhand and fast enough to run around it to hit even more forehands. Now that I have stopped competing, I finally figured out how to hit a topspin backhand. I even called Coach Rodecap to inform him of the good news just a few months ago. If only I figured this thing out about 10 years ago.
Additional Fun Fact: I think I was Scott Kuykendall's least favorite player to ever play for Marquette because I was always the last person on the court. Between my long change-over breaks and matches going the distance almost every time, I made Scott stay incredibly late for all our matches.  I hope he forgives me… (editor's note: all is forgiven, but those are hours of my life I will never get back. Also, most times the team win was already decided! - SK).
Coach Rodecap on Logon: "Logon was about as disciplined of a player as we have ever had in the program. I don't believe there has been a player in the program that has ever had more balls fed to them than Logon. He was meticulous in every aspect of his game, from his serve, to the type of water he would drink, to the green concoction that he created before every match, to his bananas. He had a desire to perfect everything that went into him becoming a better player.  His true love for the game of tennis was infectious to all his teammates."
