MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team has released its 2021 schedule, which includes 12 games featuring six home matchups in Milwaukee.
"We are pleased to announce our 2021 schedule a little over 10 months after the abrupt end to our 2020 campaign," Marquette head coach Andrew Stimmel said.
The Golden Eagles open the campaign with three home games at Valley Fields in the month of February, beginning with Cleveland State on Feb. 13. Marquette opens BIG EAST Conference play against Denver on Feb. 20 and faces Villanova on Feb. 27. With nationwide scheduling issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, MU will face the other five BIG EAST squads both at home and on the road for the first time.
"Playing our BIG EAST counterparts twice as well as Cleveland State and Notre Dame should provide a challenging slate against some of the best teams in the country and we are excited to see the growth of our group over the last year," Stimmel said. "We had a productive fall and the team is ready for the opportunity to lineup against a different colored jersey."
After a Feb. 27 matchup against Villanova at Valley Fields, MU is slated to play its first road contest at Georgetown on March 6 in Washington, D.C. Marquette's annual midweek meeting with Notre Dame also remains on the schedule, a St. Patrick's Day tilt against the Irish at Arlotta Stadium.
MU begins the month of April at Denver on Saturday, April 3 and is set to close out the regular season at Providence and Villanova on April 17 and 24, respectively. Marquette's final home contest is slated for Saturday, April 10 against Georgetown.
The schedule features an open week prior to the BIG EAST Championship for any rescheduled games.
"The road back to competition has been an arduous journey that has been embraced by our entire program," Stimmel said. "We are grateful for the many people at Marquette who have worked tirelessly to provide this opportunity for our student-athletes and will continue to be vigilant in our precautions against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The health and safety of everyone in our program is our foremost priority."
For the first time since 2017, the BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship is slated for Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, Rhode Island. The four-team, single-elimination tournament will take place from May 6-8. The tournament was scheduled to take place in Providence last year before the season was canceled.
The Golden Eagles became the tournament's first No. 4 seed to win the event in 2017 at Chapey Field by toppling then-No. 2 Denver and the host Friars to win the league's NCAA tournament automatic berth.
PLEASE NOTE:
Schedules and championship information is subject to change based on local COVID-19 developments. All Marquette home competitions will continue to be held without fans until further notice in accordance with state and local guidelines. MU is working with health officials to evaluate a potential return for fans in some capacity this season.
