MU raced out to a 23-point halftime lead
MILWAUKEE -Â The Marquette women's basketball team defeated Georgetown 72-40 on Wednesday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
Chloe Marotta scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Golden Eagles (8-2, 4-1 BIG EAST), which saw nine different players reach the scoring column. She also tallied a team-best seven rebounds to go along with four assists. Lauren Van Kleunen and Selena Lott were the two other Golden Eagles in double figures, with 14 and 13, respectively.
Marquette shot a season-best 57.1% (32-56) from the field and had 26 assists on its 32 made baskets while holding the Hoyas (1-4, 1-4 BIG EAST) to just 16-61 (26.2%) shooting.
The Golden Eagles started the game on a 20-6 run and never looked back, scoring a majority of their points (46) in the paint as they were able to get quality looks inside consistently. Marotta and LVK led the way down low, combining to score 35 of MU's 72 points (49%) on 17-of-22 shooting.
Senior guard Selena Lott posted another balanced and efficient performance, making five of her seven shot attempts while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out four assists. She's now just 20 points away from becoming the 30th Golden Eagle in program history to hit the 1,000 career point mark.
Milan Bolden-Morris led Georgetown with 11 points while Jillian Archer chipped in nine along with a team-best seven rebounds. Nine different Hoyas scored on the afternoon.
POSTGAME NOTES:
-Prior to the game, the two teams formed a heart in the center of the court as a sign of unity as "Lift Every Voice" by Alicia Keys played on the scoreboard.
-Marquette won the rebounding battle for the 39th time in the 42 games of the Coach Duffy era.
-MU posted a season-best 26 assists on its 32 made baskets as a team.
-The Golden Eagles moved to 7-0 this season and 20-3 under Coach Duffy when shooting over 45% from the field.
-It's the fourth time this season MU has shot 50% or better, including the second game in a row.
-57% shooting for the game is a new season-best and it's the 11th time in the last two seasons MU has made over 50% of its field goal attempts.
-Selena Lott registered her 41st career double-figure scoring game (13 points) and sits just 20 points away from 1,000 all-time in her career.
-Chloe Marotta had her second straight double figure scoring effort of the season, posting a career-high 21 points. She made 10 of her 11 field goal attempts.
-It's the second time this season Marquette held its opponent below 30% shooting (2-0 record in those games).
