The Golden Eagles look to rebound from Saturday's five set loss

MILWAUKEE – The No. 25 Marquette University women's volleyball team continues its campaign with matches against Northern Iowa and Drake on Jan. 30-31 at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) take on host-UNI at 7 p.m. Central time on Saturday, Jan. 30 before a 5 p.m. Sunday neutral-site matchup with Drake. Both matches will air live through ESPN+ and live statistics will be available.
Marquette is coming off a weekend split of two matches against Illinois State. MU swept its season opener on Friday night before a five-set loss to the Redbirds in which it lost the odd numbered frames and held match-point, 14-13, in the deciding stanza.
Green Bay transfer Taylor Wolf recorded a pair of triple-doubles in her first two matches for the Golden Eagles. She posted 10 kills, 16 assists and 11 digs with three blocks in Friday's sweep and notched 11 kills, 17 assists, 16 digs and three blocks in Saturday's defeat. The 2018 and 2019 Horizon League Player of the Year played both right-side hitter and setter while averaging 2.63 kills, 4.13 assists, 3.38 digs and 0.73 blocks per set.
Outside hitters Hope Werch and Hanna Vanden Berg each averaged 2.13 kills for Marquette, while another transfer, Savannah Rennie from Cal, averaged 1.38 kills and 0.75 blocks per set. Returning players also stepped into bigger roles for the Golden Eagles with Claire Nuessmeier and Katie Schoessow playing at middle blocker and libero, respectively. Nuessmeier posted six of her eight blocks in Friday's sweep and Schoessow notched a total of 29 digs.
UNI opened the season 0-3 last weekend with a pair of 3-1 losses to Drake and Nebraska-Omaha and a sweep at the hands of No. 15 Creighton. Panthers legend Bobbi Peterson is in her 21st season leading UNI as head coach and is joined on the bench by assistant coach Jason Allen, who served in the same capacity at MU in 2013. Sophomore middle Emily Holterhaus leads the Panthers with 3.09 kills and 0.73 blocks per set, but UNI hit just .113 in their opening weekend.
Drake is 3-0 with wins against UNI (3-1), Western Illinois (3-1) and a sweep of South Dakota State. Senior Emily Plock (4.00) and Jada Wills (3.09) each average over three kills per set for Drake, which has hit .209 over its first three contests. Senior Gillian Gergen recorded 14 blocks last weekend and is averaging 1.40 per frame.
The Bulldogs and Panthers will face off again on Friday night at 6 p.m. prior to MU's two matches in Cedar Falls.
MU is 2-4 all-time against UNI, including a four-set win at the Al McGuire Center in the last meeting on Sept. 21, 2019. The Golden Eagles are 4-2 against Drake and the two squads have not met since a Marquette sweep on Sept. 4, 2004 in Milwaukee.
