Golden Eagles host nationally ranked Providence Tuesday at 8 p.m. CT
MILWAUKEE -Â Marquette fell to Creighton, 75-69, in the Golden Eagles' third BIG EAST Conference matchup in the New Year's Day matinee at Fiserv Forum.
Forward Oso Ighodaro led the scoring effort for MU (8-6, 0-3 BIG EAST) with a career-high 22 points and the Golden Eagles shot 38.2 percent (29-of-76) from the field in the loss.
Creighton's front court of Ryan Kalkbrenner and Ryan Hawkins both picked up double-doubles and combined for 38 points to lead the Bluejays (10-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) to their second-straight win over Marquette. Kalkbrenner had career-highs in points and rebounds with 20 points on 66.7 percent shooting, 12 rebounds, and added four blocks.
The Golden Eagles battled back from down 17 points during the second half. Forward Justin Lewis had a late assist for an Ighodaro dunk to tie the game with 40 seconds remaining. The Golden Eagles had a chance to win the matchup with six seconds remaining but the New Year's Day game went into overtime for the first time this season for both teams.
The teams entered the second overtime period after a buzzer-beating shot from Creighton's Alex O'Connell to tie the game and the Bluejay's eight points in double OT proved the difference in the loss.

- The all-time series between the two programs is a century-long affair, with the match-ups starting back in 1922-23. Marquette leads the all-time series now (56-37).
- Oso Ighodaro scored a career-high for 22 points, on 83.3 percent from the field, for the Golden Eagles, surpassing his 14-point outing against Jackson State on Nov. 30, 2021.
- Marquette dominated Creighton in bench points, picking up 31 points to Creighton's two.
- Tyler Kolek added to his dominant lead of the BIG EAST assist count, picking up another 6+ assist game – his eighth such performance of the season and his fifth consecutively. Â
- Lewis added 12 rebounds, his fourth time this season with double-digit rebounds. The redshirt freshman is top-10 in the BIG EAST in rebounding per game.
- The last time Marquette had seen a double overtime game was Jan. 29, 2020 in a win at Xavier. The last time Marquette lost a double overtime game was March 8, 2014 against St. John's.
- Lewis also tied a career-high three blocks, tying his performance on Jan. 12, 2021 against Providence.
- Marquette has now played seven games on New Year's Day since joining the BIG EAST, marking a 4-3 record on turning-the-year games.
