Eichhorn and Marquette each finish third at Hawkeye Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Redshirt junior Hunter Eichhorn placed third individually at 8-under par and the Marquette University men's golf team finished third at the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course on Sunday afternoon.

Eichhorn recorded his second top-five finish of the spring with three rounds of 70-or-better, including Sunday's final round of a 2-under 70. He began his day in a tie for second, teeing off on the par-4 first hole with tournament leaders Alex Schaake of Iowa and Harry Hillier of Kansas. Despite finishing two strokes under par on Sunday, Eichhorn dropped a spot on the leaderboard, while Schaake cruised to medalist honors at 12-under on the strength of his first round 65 on Saturday morning.

The Golden Eagles were 1-over par on the day, but were able to hold off Wisconsin and finish the invitational in third place at 5-under par.

Eichhorn, who opened the tournament with rounds of 70 and 68 on Saturday, turned in five birdies and three bogeys on Sunday for the 11th top-five finish of his illustrious career.

Redshirt freshmen Aidan Lafferty (76-74-69--219) and Josh Robinson (73-69-77--219) were MU's next two finishers, each posting 54-hole scores of 3-over par to toe for 23rd. Tyler Leach (72-72-76--220) and Nicolás Evangelio (72-75-74--221) finished one and two strokes behind the pair, respectively, at 4-over and 5-over par.

The Golden Eagles resume action in the 2021 BIG EAST Conference Men's Golf Championship on April 26-28 at Streamsong Resort - Blue Course in Bowling Green, Florida. Marquette looks to defend its 2019 title after last year's event was canceled due to COVID. MU won the event in 2008, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
